Damnati ad Beatius - to be sentenced to be killed by wild animals in the arena

Damnati ad gladium - to be senctenced to be killed by the sword in the arena

Damnati ad ludum - to be sentenced to a gladiator school and trained to fight in the arena

Dimachaerus - a gladiator who fought with a sword in each hand

Editor - the giver of games, decides if a gladiator lives or dies

Eques - a gladiator who fought on horse back with a round shield and a lance

Essedarious - a gladiator who fought in a horse drawn chariot

Forum - a public square or marketplace; early gladiator display

Galley - an anient warship propelled by oars

Gladiator - a professional swordsman, who fought usually to the death; Gladiator combat was a form of popular entertainment in Anient Rome

Gladius - a short straight sword

Hoplomachus - a heavily armored gladiator who wore crested helment and carried a long shield

Lacquearius - a gladiator armed with spear and rope to catch his opponent

Lanista - businessman who organized gladiatorial displays for a fee

Legionaries - soldiers; a legion of the Roman army consisted of 3000 to 6000 men

Lictor - the traditional bodyguard of the consul in the Roman Republic

Ludi - The Roman games; gladiatorial shows and wild animal fights

Missilia - numbered wooden balls thrown to the crowd during the games to be redeemed for prizes

Missus - to grant a defeated gladiator his life

Musus - a gladiator show

Mirmillo - a heavy armored gladiator who identified with the images of fishes that decorated his helmet

Naumachia - a recreated sea battle that involved the thousands of men

Ocrea - a metal leg guard

Paegniarius - a fighter who used a whip and club against a similarly armed opponent

Parma - the small shield of a Thracian gladiator

Patrician - a Roman nobleman

Plebeian - a commoner in Roman society
